چکیده

[1] Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) helps to constrain the origin of relict and largely buried fluvial channels in the Bir Kiseiba region of southern Egypt. Our results indicate that the trunk channel to a tributary system identified in Shuttle Imaging Radar data is incised 10–12 m into bedrock, was southwest draining in its final configuration and laterally migrating toward the northwest, and accentuated relief along the nearby Kiseiba escarpment. Alluvium partially filling the main channel likely reflects effects of increasing aridity and bed load combined with less frequent, flashier precipitation. In contrast to defining channel margins, radar data do not indicate subtle stratigraphic changes in bedding related to fluvial aggradation, but do highlight local reflections likely corresponding to relict alluvial bedforms. Our results support the contention that an impulse GPR system, currently under development, could be deployed on a future Mars rover and assist in defining the regional evolution of the landscape and specific targets for sampling.

Subsurface imaging with low frequency SAR Field validation in Egypt using a Ground-Penetrating Radar

We study the capabilities of low frequency radar systems to sound the subsurface in arid countries. This approach is based on the coupling between two complementary radar techniques: the airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) used in L-band (1.2 GHz) for imaging large scale subsurface structures, and the Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) used between 500 and 900 MHz for sounding soils at a local ...

Subsurface imaging in south-central Egypt using low-frequency radar: Bir Safsaf revisited

We present the capabilities of low-frequency radar systems to sound the subsurface for a site located in south-central Egypt, the Bir Safsaf region. This site was already intensively studied since the SIR-A and SIR-B orbital radars revealed buried paleodrainage channels. Our approach is based on the coupling between two complementary radar techniques: the orbital synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ...

Simulation and Design of Ground-Penetrating Radar for Mars Exploration

Over the past few years, the interest in exploring Mars has grown, with several missions in the planning stages for the next decade. One motivating theme is the potential of discovering substantial sub-surface aqueous reservoirs. This paper outlines the simulation and development of a lightweight, low-power, ground-penetrating radar system intended for the subsurface exploration of Mars.

Fully Polarimetric Ground Penetrating Radar WISDOM

The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) WISDOM is designed to be part of 2018 ExoMars Rover payload. The main scientific objective of WISDOM is to characterize the material distribution within the first few meters of the Martian subsurface and to search for evidence of past and present life on Mars. The WISDOM radar will provide a penetration depth of about 3 meters with a resolution of a few centim...
